History and Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi 2023

Lord Ganesha is known to be the God of happiness, prosperity, knowledge, and wisdom. The legend goes that Maa Parvati had used Sandalwood paste to create Lord Ganesha. Then as she took a bath, she left Lord Ganesha to guard the place.

At this time Lord Shiva was not present and was hence caught unaware of the arrangement. But, upon his return, he was taken by surprise to find Lord Ganesha outside the spot where Maa Parvati took a bath.

Now, Lord Shiva is furious because of Lord Ganesha’s denial of access to the place where Maa Parvati was taking a bath. Lord Shiva severed Lord Ganesha’s head.

When Maa Parvati sees this, she is infuriated and takes the Kaali’s Avtar. She threatens to end the world.

When Lord Shiva comes to know of this, he requests his men to get a child’s head whose mother is looking the other way. So, his men get a baby elephant’s head and pass it over to Lord Shiva.

This is the story of how Ganesha came to be recognized as the elephant headed God.

For all Hindus, Ganesh Chaturthi holds a tremendous bit of cultural and spiritual value. Lord Ganesha is the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. He blesses his devotees with good fortune, success, and wisdom. And the devotees too seek lord Ganesha’s blessings before starting any new job, which could be employment, examination, or wedding.
